I was watching a documentary on Sky which talked about Earth's magnetic poles reversing ... Apparently, it will happen one day.
The intervening period of uncertainty before the deed actually is completed, apparently, means several hundred years of much reduced ionospheric protection on Earth from cosmic and other nasty rays.
Perhaps the research you refer to might have implications for Earth as well as extra terrestrial locations :-)
